The Transcentral Highway climbs from Cebu City over the island's spine to Balamban on the west coast. It is the closest real mountain ride to the city: cool air, views over Cebu and the Camotes Sea, and a lot of curves.
Route and distance
From Lahug go up through Busay; the winding section to Balamban is roughly 40-50 km depending on where you start, about 1.5-2 hours one way with stops. From Balamban you can ride south along the west coast toward Toledo and on to Moalboal.
Stops on the way
- Tops Lookout in Busay: the classic view over Cebu City.
- Temple of Leah: the Greco-Roman style mansion above the city, often called Cebu's Taj Mahal.
- Roadside cafes and view decks in Busay, popular at sunset.
Riding tips
- Sharp curves and steep grades: the road is known locally for crashes. Ride well within your limits.
- Fog and rain come fast in the afternoon; start in the morning.
- Fuel up in the city; stations are scarce on the mountain section.
Which bike
A Honda Click 125 handles the climb fine solo. Two-up or for the full loop, the Kawasaki Ninja 400 is the bike this road was made for: from PHP 2,000 a day, minimum 2 days.
